Monforte del Cid is a municipality in the Valencian Community, Spain; located in the interior of the province of Alicante, in the region of Medio Vinalopó.
Monforte owes its “surname” to the Sierra del Cid, where a legend associates this geographical feature with the figure of the medieval knight. As recorded in the charters of the city of Alicante, in the thirteenth century, the town received the name of Nompot. Perhaps because it is at the foot of a mountain crowned by a fortress, the name was changed to Monfort, hence the Spanish form of Monforte was adopted. As there were other towns with the same name, it received, at the beginning of the 20th century, the appendix of Cid, in reference to the Sierra del Cid that rises in its vicinity and recalls the exploits of Rodrigo Dí¬az de Vivar in the province of Alicante.
